Blackboard course backups

In Blackboard there are three course backup options-

Export– Creates a content-only backup that can be used again by any instructor.
Archive– Creates a full course backup, including student data, for archive purposes. This type of backup can only be restored by a system administrator.
Export Common Cartridge– This option is used when an instructor wants to export course content to be used in a different Learning Management System. This option can only export certain types of content.

Faculty are encouraged to use the Export option to make backups of their course content.

To make an export backup-

  1. Go to the course Control Panel > Packages and Utilities menu. Choose Export/Archive course.
  2. Click the Export button. Check the boxes next to any course materials that you would like to save. When you are finished making your selections, click Submit.
  3. You will receive an confirmation email when the process is complete. The process usually takes a few minutes, but could take longer if the course contains large files.
  4. Once the email has been recieved, go back to the Export/Archive menu and the file will be listed as ExportFile_courseid_datestamp.zip. Click on the filename and save the file to a secure location (such as your network folder).

To use the file to import content into a new course-

  1. Go to the course Control Panel > Packages and Utilities menu. Choose Import Package/View Logs.
  2. Click the Import Package button. Use the Browse button to location the export file that you saved previously. Check the boxes next to the course materials that you would like to import. When you are finished making your selections, click Submit.
  3. You will receive an confirmation email when the import process is complete. The process usually takes a few minutes, but could take longer if the course contains large files.
